The top lot was Edvard Munch’s Attraction I, 1896, a hand-colored lithograph that sold for £580,000, or $1.1 million (estimate: £60,000/80,000), a record price for a Munch print.
Works by the artist figured prominently in the top lots, including: Two Human Beings, The Lonely Ones, 1899, a woodcut printed in colors, which brought £333,600 ($656,458) against a considerably higher estimate of £300,000/400,000; On the Waves of Love, 1896, a lithograph that fetched £156,000, or $307,000 (estimate: £60,000/80,000); and an 1895 lithograph, Self Portrait, which made £66,000, or $129,875 (estimate: £25,000/30,000).
Andy Warhol’s Campbell’s Soup II, a set of 10 screenprints in color, 1969, brought £144,000, or $283,363 (estimate: £80,000/100,000); and his Marilyn, a 1967 screenprint in colors, sold for £78,000, or $153,488 (estimate: £40,000/50,000).
Growing, 1988, a complete set of five screenprints in color by Keith Haring, took £69,600, or $136,959 (estimate: £20,000/30,000).
Jennie Rose, head of the prints department at Sotheby’s London, reported bidding from both private collectors and dealers. “There was evidence of new buyers,” she said, “especially in the British Pop section, which included works by David Hockney and Richard Hamilton.”
Picasso’s Meninas, a 1973 etching with aquatint and drypoint by Hamilton, sold for £22,800, or $45,000 (estimate: £15,000/20,000); and Hockney’s Small Dogs, 1995, an etching with aquatint, doubled the modest £3,000 high estimate to sell for £8,400 ($16,550).
