Sotheby’s Paris Drawings Sale Posts Several Records

Old Master and 19th-century drawings and paintings brought solid prices at Sotheby’s in Paris on June 24.

PARIS—Old Master and 19th-century drawings and paintings brought solid prices at Sotheby’s in Paris on June 24. Of 133 lots, 87, or 65 percent, were sold, for a total of €5million ($7 million). By value the auction was 87 percent sold. The top lot of the afternoon was Adam and Eve, 1720, by François le Moyne (1688–1737). The oil painting on copper sold for a record €1.3million ($1.8 million), several times its estimate of €200,000/300,000. Another highlight of the sale was a painting attributed to Jan Claesz. (before 1570–after 1618). The full-length oil-on-panel portrait of a young boy holding a horse by the harness, 1618, sold for €360,750 ($505,500), nearly nine times the estimate of €30,000/40,000. Other highlights of the session included a pair of 1784 gouache paintings of two different views of Naples by Saverio Della Gatta (active 1777–1827), which sold for €138,750 ($194,400) against an estimate of €20,000/30,000, and an 1863 oil on canvas by Louis-Auguste Lapito (1803–74) depicting a view of Genoa from the mountains, which sold for €150,750 ($211,247) on an estimate of €35,000/ 50,000. Both were records for the respective artists.

The sale also featured La Folie pare la Décrépitude des ajustements de la Jeunesse, 1743, a pastel by Charles-Antoine Coypel estimated at €100,000/150,000, which sold for €336,750 ($471,900), and An Open Missal, an oil on panel attributed to the 16th-century German school, estimated at €40,000/60,000, which sold for €108,750 ($152,400). An oil on paper depicting the Paris boulevards at night, circa 1896, by Luigi Loir (Aloys-François-Joseph Loir) was estimated at €12,000/18,000 and sold for €53,550 ($75,040). And an oil on canvas by Peter Patel the Elder (1605–1676) of an evening landscape with shepherds near a temple of Vesta, sold for €222,750 ($312,140), nearly doubling the estimate of €80,000/120,000.
