    Phillips de Pury Photo Auctions Gaining Ground

    NEW YORK—Untitled Film Still #49, 1979, by Cindy Sherman was the top seller at Phillips de Pury & Company’s two-part photography sale on April 4, realizing $626,500 and outstripping the $300,000/400,000 estimate. Sherman’s color Untitled #403, 2000, also did better than expected, selling for $134,500 on an estimate of $50,000/70,000. The New York sale was a strong one for the auction house, which earned $6.1 million, above the $3.9 million/5.6 million estimate, with 193, or 81 percent, of the 239 lots on offer finding buyers.

    Among the other top sellers were Andreas Gursky’s Taipei, 1999, which sold for $302,500, compared with an estimate of $120,000/180,000; Sally Mann’s Candy Cigarette, 1989, which sold for $266,500, on an estimate of $40,000/60,000; Irving Penn’s Woman with Roses on Her Arm, Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn, 1950, which sold for $230,500, compared with an estimate of $200,000/300,000; and Alfred Stieglitz’s Georgia O’Keeffe, 1918, which sold for $182,500, compared with an estimate of $200,000/300,000.

    Francesca Woodman’s Untitled Rome, 1977–78, sold for $177,500, compared with an estimate of $15,000/20,000, and Edward Weston’s Portrait of a Woman, 1916, sold for $134,500, compared with an estimate of $50,000/70,000.

    The prices for the Mann and Woodman photographs set new auction records for these artists, as did the $86,500 price paid for Brassaï’s Le Pont du Carrousel, 1932, which was estimated at $30,000/50,000.

    Among the lots that failed to find buyers were a Paul Strand photo, Young Farmer, Po Valley, 1953, which had an estimate of $20,000/30,000, as well as his Man in a Derby, New York, 1916, which was estimated at $20,000/30,000.
