An Indoor Gallery of Top Street Artists

An exhibition at Jonathan LeVine Gallery unites work by Shepard Fairey, Swoon, Faile, Skewville, and more

For four more days, works by some of the world’s top street artists, including Faile, JR, and Olek, are on view in downtown Manhattan. In fact, they’re all under one roof as part of Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s exhibition “10 Years of Wooster Collective: 2003–2013.”

The show, in a pop-up space on West 22nd Street, is curated by Wooster Collective founders Sara and Marc Schiller, who have devoted their nonprofit to promoting street art in the U.S. and abroad. “We wanted to show that this art is not only at the highest level, but that the energy of the artists’ work can still exist in the gallery,” says Marc.

The energy, vibrancy, and free-spirited nature of the streets is very much present here. In Buff Monster’s acrylic-on-wood Delirium, for example, a mass of ice cream–colored cycloptic creatures dominate the picture plane, with the figure at the top of the pile sticking its tongue out at the viewer. In Doze Green’s psychedelic canvas Marduk, human and avian body parts meld together into one precise, cubist mound. And for Skewville’s tongue-in-cheek work Selling Out is the New Keeping it Real, the artists spray enameled metal planks to read “Sold Out” and “Keep it Real.”

The show doesn’t take place entirely indoors, though. In conjunction with the exhibition, Shepard Fairey, Eltono, Buff Monster, and Faith47, among others, completed outdoor murals in the DUMBO and Williamsburg neighborhoods of Brooklyn.

“10 Years of Wooster Collective: 2003–2013″ is on view at Jonathan LeVine Gallery’s 22nd Street location through August 24.
