Sotheby’s 175 Photographs to Celebrate 175 Years of Photography sale last week set the record for a photographs auction, totaling $21,325,063 with 90 percent lots sold. The sale exceeded its high estimate of $20 million, and records were set for several photographers, including August Sander, Tina Modotti, and Walker Evans.

The single-owner sale was culled from the collection of Howard Stein and will benefit his Joy of Giving Something Foundation. The previous record for a photographs auction, according to Sotheby’s, was $6 million.
