Jerry Saltz Is the First Art Critic Ever to Win a National Magazine Award for His Column

Last night the American Society of Magazine Editors announced the winners of its National Magazine Awards, also known as the ASMEs, or the Ellies, after the title of the Alexander Calder-designed elephant trophy given to those winners.

You can see the full list here. Among them is New York magazine’s own Jerry Saltz, who is the first art critic to win in the Columns and Commentary category (though Simon Schama did win in 1996, in the Essays and Criticism category, for three essays for The New Yorker).

Here are the pieces that secured the victory: Saltz on Jeff Koons, Henri Matisse, and young abstract art.
