The Swiss Institute’s board of trustees has announced their election of Maja Hoffmann as board chair. Hoffmann, a supporter of the institute since 2008, will assume her new role in June 2016, replacing Fabienne Abrecht, a longtime trustee who chaired the board since 2002 and led the Swiss Institute’s move from 495 Broadway to its current address at 18 Wooster Street.

“As Swiss Institute turns 30, it’s time for a change, and I could not be happier to hand over board chairmanship to such capable and caring hands,” Abrecht said in a press released. “I had hoped for quite some time that Ms. Hoffmann would succeed me. A visionary international philanthropist, she is at home in both Switzerland and the United States. Swiss Institute is fortunate to have Ms. Hoffmann become its Chair, and I look forward to seeing the institution carry on and expand upon its mission through her unyielding dedication to the arts.”

Hoffmann is one of the top art collectors of contemporary art in the world, known widely for her art advocacy as well as for creating the LUMA Foundation in 2004. Coincidentally, the timing of Hoffmann’s appointment corresponds with the Swiss Institute’s 30th anniversary.
