At the Los Angeles County Museum of Art in July, the museum’s director, Michael Govan, sat down with Steve McQueen and Kanye West for a freewheeling conversation about art, race, music, and film. I was there, and even though they confiscated all phones prior to entry, I managed to take notes on the proceedings. West, who by his own account was fueled by Grey Goose, recalled how he tried to hip the head of Marvel Studios to Matthew Barney’s Cremaster Cycle, offered to spit a freestyle rap but only if every member of the press left the room, and said things like “That’s why I embrace racism, because I’m like, at least you have a fucking opinion!”
The nominal reason for the chat was the premiere of a music video McQueen directed for two of West’s songs, “All Day” and “I Feel Like That,” which LACMA had offered to install for a brief period. That video has now leaked, and you can watch it below.
As you may have heard, West’s seventh studio album, The Life of Pablo, was recently premiered at Madison Square Garden alongside a performance by his longtime collaborator Vanessa Beecroft, who was profiled in these pages last week.
McQueen’s current show at Marian Goodman in Paris is up through Saturday.
Update 02/22/2016, 5:10 p.m.: Alas, it seems the video was leaked, not officially released, and it has disappeared from all civilized parts of the Internet.
