L.A. Habitat: David Hockney

Hockney and his assistant JP filmed this video of a Chinese scroll from 1751 in Beijing last April. Hockney mentioned a recent lecture he gave at the Getty where he presented the piece. “I asked a question—why was European art the only art to use shadows?” he said. “Because Chinese art, Japanese art, Persian art, Indian art never used shadows.” His answer: the optical instruments he believes artists used during the Renaissance.
