The Walker Art Center announced today that it has been awarded a $1 million grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. The funds from the grant, which recognizes the Walker’s interdisciplinary programming, will go toward various projects at the museum, including new research initiatives and artist commissions.

In a release, the Minneapolis museum detailed what it would do with the money it has now received. The museum will plan nine commissioned works by such artists as Maria Hassabi, Jason Moran, and Laure Prouvost. Some money will also go toward retooling the Walker’s website, and the museum is also planning a new research program that will culminate in a conference in 2019.

The Walker’s executive director, Olga Viso, said in a statement, “Contemporary artists have blurred the lines between artistic disciplines for decades, and museums and performing art centers like ourselves must remain responsive to these evolving practices.”
