Art Basel announced today that Philipp Kaiser will be the new curator for its Public sector, the section of Miami Beach fair that presents large-scale public art commissions in Collins Park. He’ll take the helm with the 2017 edition of the fair, replacing the Public Art Fund’s director, Nicholas Blume, who has curated the section since 2013.
Kaiser has a formidable resume, having served as the director of the Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany, from 2012 to 2014, a senior curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles, and head of contemporary art at the Kunstmuseum Basel / Museum für Gegenwartskunst in Switzerland.
The Swiss-born curator was also named the curator of the Swiss Pavilion for the 2017 Venice Biennale earlier this year and, as ARTnews reported, will be curating the inaugural exhibition at Los Angeles’s Marciano Foundation, the private museum of the brothers behind Guess, which is slated to open next spring. He also curated Cindy Sherman’s recent solo show at the Broad in L.A.
