The Artist Responsible for That Incredible Portrait of Beyoncé Is Awol Erizku

The work in question.

The work in question.

As you may have heard, Beyoncé is pregnant with twins. The superstar made the announcement in a photo posted on Instagram this afternoon. Since that news broke, many have been wondering who is responsible for the remarkable snap. The answer: the young Los Angeles– and New York–based artist Awol Erizku.

A source close to Miami’s Nina Johnson gallery, where Erizku had a show late last year, said that the artist confirmed via text that he took the picture.

The original Instagram post, which went up a few hours ago, already has more than five million likes.

Nina Johnson could not be reached—galleries close early in Miami!—and Night Gallery, which represents Erizku in Los Angeles, declined to comment. A DM to Beyoncé’s Instagram account went unanswered.

Update, February 2: Those looking for more work by Erizku can take a look at a 2016 show he did with his own Duchamp Detox Clinic space in Los Angeles, a 2015 exhibition at the Flag Art Foundation in New York, and his 2014 outing at Hasted Kraeutler in New York. This year he will have shows at Night Gallery in L.A. and Ben Brown in London. His work is also included in “Commercial Break,” a show organized by the Public Art Fund that will feature digital interventions installed around New York City
