The second edition of the 1:53 Contemporary African Art Fair.

The organizers of the 1:54 Contemporary African Art Fair announced today the list of participating exhibitors for its upcoming third edition in New York, which will coincide with Frieze New York and run from May 5 to May 7, with previews beginning May 3. 1:54, which aims to highlight African and African diaspora artists, will return to its previous location at Pioneer Works in Red Hook, Brooklyn and bring together 19 galleries from the United States, Europe, and Africa.

“With the third edition, it’s obviously getting stronger with more galleries engaged from the African continent,” 1:54’s founding director, Touria El Glaoui, told ARTnews. “1:54 is about the balance of having the right number of galleries from the African continent as well as from around the world.” Two countries, Ghana and Angola, will be represented at the fair for the first time in New York.

Among the highlights for this fair, El Glaoui said, will be a solo show at Voice Gallery of Morocco of French Moroccan photographer Laila Alaoui, who died last January after injuries sustained during a terrorist attack in Burkina Faso. And London’s Tyburn Gallery will present work by Mohau Mokadiseng, one of the two artists selected to represent South Africa in the upcoming Venice Biennale.

When asked what visitors can expect at the upcoming fair, El Glaoui said that because of its small size they have asked the participating galleries to present “a special show for us. It will be unique. We don’t want the audience to think they’ve seen it before. We try to fill in the spaces with what would make for the most interesting show for a visitor in New York.”
