The Mike Kelley Foundation for the Arts has brought the photographer Catherine Opie onto its board of directors. Other board members include Los Angeles County Museum of Art curator Stephanie Barron; the Getty Foundation’s deputy director, Joan Weinstein; and artist Jim Shaw.

Opie is well known for her pictures of the LGBTQI community that play on—and subvert—the conventions of portrait photography. Last year, she was the subject of three museum shows in Los Angeles, at LACMA, the Hammer Museum, and the Museum of Contemporary Art.

In a statement, Mary Clare Stevens, the foundation’s executive director, said of Opie, “Cathy’s strong voice, energy, and commitment to the arts as an artist, teacher, and advocate will undoubtedly deepen our efforts and will be invaluable to the development of our organization.”

Kelley started the foundation in 2007, and it funds projects in the arts and supports the legacy of the late artist, who died in 2012.
