Knight Foundation Awards $2.5 M. in Public Art Project Grants

Tarell Alvin McCraney, winner of a 2016 Knight Arts Challenge award.

The Knight Foundation has named the winners of its 10th annual Knight Arts Challenge, which awards grants to art projects proposed by South Florida-based artists and organizations. This year’s 43 winners, to be announced Monday evening at the Pérez Art Museum Miami, will receive a shared $2.5 million in prize money to execute their various visions.

Projects proposed for the awards range wildly in scale and concept. They include a public conversation series at the Bass museum; a series of “miniconcerts” to be held at Metrorail stations around Miami; a climate change awareness campaign called the Miami Mermaid Debates; and funding for a Creative Time Summit in Miami.

In a statement, Knight Foundation president Alberto Ibargüen said the award winners collectively “inspire and create common experiences that connect us to each other and to home, Miami.”
