Following Javier Pes’s resignation earlier this year, the Art Newspaper has named Alison Cole as its editor. She is currently a critic for the Arts Desk and the Independent, as well as an art consultant. Cole will take up her new position on February 1. Pes held the position for about a year and had been at the outlet for nearly a decade.
This is not the first time Cole has helmed an art publication—she previously was editor of Art Quarterly. Outside the world of art magazines, Cole has also written books about Michelangelo and the relationship between power and art in Renaissance Italian courts.
Cole has also helped lead the communications departments of the Art Fund, the Southbank Centre, and Arts Council England. With the BBC and Arts Council England, Cole launched the Space, a digital arts channel. And, in addition to all those ventures, she is currently a trustee at the Foundling Museum in London and a learning adviser to Art UK, an organization that makes available online information about works held in public ownership by the United Kingdom.
