David Hockney Painting to Go on Block at Sotheby’s in May, With $20 M.–$30 M. Estimate

Sotheby’s added a landmark David Hockney painting, a colorful California landscape titled Pacific Coast Highway and Santa Monica (1990), to its upcoming contemporary art evening sale on May 16, with a $20 million–$30 million estimate that would mark a record for the artist at auction. Hockney’s previous auction record was $11.7 million, for his six-part paneled painting, WOLDGATE WOODS, 24, 25, AND 26 OCTOBER 2006, sold at Sotheby’s in the fall of 2016.

Interest in the British painter’s work has been on the rise in the wake of a survey show organized by Tate Britain, the Centre Pompidou, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, as well as a show now on view at Pace Gallery in New York. If Pacific Coast Highway and Santa Monica sells for its lowest estimate, Hockney’s auction record will double within a span of two years. The painting is being offered by an unnamed private collection.

In a statement, David Galperin, head of the Sotheby’s contemporary art evening auction, called Pacific Coast Highway and Santa Monica “a true triumph of his singular vision: a panoramic and kaleidoscopic paean to his adopted hometown.”
