In 2019, ADAA Art Show Will Again Open in Late February in New York, Week Before Armory Show

The art fair calendar in New York in February and March will once again be a bit complicated next year.

The Art Dealers Association of America announced today that the 2019 edition of its Art Show at the Park Avenue Armory will open during the last week of February, as it did this year, the week before the Armory Show opens on Piers 92 and 94 along the Hudson River.

Historically, the two major fairs had almost always run during the same week—under the banner of Armory Week—but in 2017 the Armory Show’s organizers decided to shift its dates to the first week of March for the 2018 edition, and by the time the ADAA was notified, it had already committed to its standard slot, which fell at the end of February.

Andrew L. Schoelkopf, the president of the ADAA, noted in an email to ARTnews today that the dates for the 2019 Art Show—scheduled for February 28 through March 3, with a gala preview on Wednesday, February 27—conform to the same week that the organization has used for the past 30 years.

“In 2018, the caliber of the presentations was individually, and collectively, very strong, and we continued to hear unsolicited feedback from collectors, museum directors, and curators that the Art Show is their favorite fair,” Schoelkopf said. “We aim to reach the same high bar every year, if not surpass it, and part of that is to maintain the fair’s longstanding place in the art world calendar and the singular setting, location, and accessibility provided by the Park Avenue Armory.”

The Armory Show, for its part, will run next year from March 7 through 10, with a preview on March 6, and the Independent art fair has said it will run concurrently, opening to invited guests on March 7 at Spring Studios in Tribeca. NADA New York, which this year ran at the same time as the Armory Show at Skylight Clarkson North in Hudson Square, said that it has not yet committed to exact dates.

We had a great fair in 2018, so our main focus has been how we can continue to sustain and enhance the fair platform that has served our membership and partners well for three decades,” Schoelkopf said.
