The De Appel art center in Amsterdam has appointed Monika Szewczyk as its new director. She will start at the museum on May 1, and she will take over from Maaike Lauwaert, who had been serving as acting director following the departure of Niels Van Tomme this past November.

“It’s a time of institutional renewal at De Appel and I am excited to work with the team and board to make the most of this opportunity,” Szewczyk said in a statement. “We can draw on the wisdom of artists, poets, critics, constructivists, politicians, beauticians, economists, entrepreneurs, historians, futurists and De Appel’s worldly support base.”

Szewczyk was one of six curators behind the 2017 edition of Documenta. Prior to that, Szewczyk had worked on the inaugural exhibition program of the University of Chicago’s Reva and David Logan Center for the Arts, and had also held positions at the Witte de With Center and the Piet Zwart Institute, both of which are based in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.

In a statement, the museum said, “The board and team of De Appel are greatly looking forward to working with her in the coming years.”
