I didn’t plan to be a collector,” Chara Schreyer once told sfgate.com in 2006. “It just happened that way.” Whether she planned on it or not, her collection is now widely considered to be one of the top ten private collections of modern and contemporary art in the world, and it includes works by such paragons as Andy Warhol, Sol LeWitt, Jeff Wall, Richard Serra, and Fred Sandback, among many others. Schreyer describes her art holdings as “many collections within a collection,” which she feels allows for the promotion and discovery of new dialogues between disparate works of art.

Fun fact:

In 2006, Schreyer moved all of her artwork—and herself—to the 24th floor of the Four Seasons in San Francisco. The interior—designed by Gary Hutton, with whom she has shared a 30-year working relationship— includes a powder room with a clear door that frosts over as soon as someone shuts it.
