Qiao Zhibing, who lives in Shanghai, made his money in nightclubs and karaoke bars in Shanghai and Beijing. He told ARTnews that the artists in his collection include Sterling Ruby, Theaster Gates, Thomas Houseago, Olafur Eliasson, Michaël Borremans, Damien Hirst, Wilhelm Sasnal, Danh Vo, and Chinese artists like Zhang Enli, Liu Wei, Xu Zhen, Qiu Xiaofei, Yang Fudong, and Ou Yangchun. A member of several museum boards, Qiao started collecting in 2006 because he one day “realized I’d love to fill in my blank walls,” he said. He will open Tank Shanghai, a combination art museum and recreation facility, in December 2016.

Fun fact:

Qiao’s daughter, Jourdan Qiao, is a student at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, and Qiao told the Wall Street Journal in 2015 that he bought a work titled “Don’t Worry, It Will Be Better,” because, “My daughter was a moody teenager at the time…So I wanted to tell her, there was no need to be worried.”
