Dean Valentine is not interested in established artists. “[It’s] not a meaningful pursuit for me,” he told the Hollywood Reporter in 2013. “I’m more engaged with why somebody’s making what they’re making, what the changes are of the time, and why this generation’s different than the last.” As a result, Valentine deals only with emerging talent, and the 600-plus works in his collection are by artists like Liz Craft, Sam Durant, Katie Grinnan, and Jonathan Pylypchuk. According to Valentine, if something is selling for over a couple of hundred thousand dollars, it’s already been picked over by the art world. As he told once told the Robb Report, “I have much more fun with art that hasn’t been validated yet, because I get to be part of that validating process.” Valentine is set to start a boutique art fair, Felix LA, in Los Angeles in 2019.
