Contemporary African art and international art of the African diaspora

Overview

It was the acquisition of a work by Isaac Julien that turned Jochen Zeitz’s interests toward artists from Africa and its diaspora. Founded in 2002, the Zeitz Collection now includes works by Owusu-Ankomah, Kudzanai Chiurai, Marlene Dumas, Rashid Johnson, Glenn Ligon, Julie Mehretu, Nandipha Mntambo, Wangechi Mutu, Chris Ofili, Andrew Putter, Nicholas Hlobo, Kehinde Wiley, and Hank Willis Thomas, among others. Zeitz’s impressive collection was never intended for private enjoyment, however. In his words: “My collection has been strategically built over many years specifically with the goal to create an internationally relevant public contemporary art museum in Africa.” Nearly 30 years after his first visit to the continent, Zeitz is meeting his goal with the 2017 opening of the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa in Cape Town, South Africa.
