Pieter and Marieke Sanders have been collecting the work of emerging Dutch and international artists for more than four decades. In that time, they have amassed a collection that is diverse both in terms of the artists represented within it as well as its range of mediums, which incorporates painting, sculpture, photography, video art, and works on paper. Their historic home in Haarlem, the Netherlands—which the couple restored and moved into in 2012—serves as a setting for their impressive collection. In 2013, however, the couple decided that at least some of their artwork should be made available to the public. “Art,” the couple has said, “needs to be seen.” In support of that sentiment, they chose to donate 127 works by 92 artists to the Stedelijk Museum to celebrate its reopening in 2013. Ann Goldstein, then the museum’s director, called the gift “exceptional”—and the Sanders’ generosity “nothing less than extraordinary.”
