Susana and Ricardo Steinbruch are part of a relatively new group of Latin American collectors who have been taking their place on the international art stage in the last ten to 15 years. The couple’s influence has been so widely felt that in 2010 they were recognized by the Stephen Friedman Gallery exhibition “Tasters’ Choice,” as one of six “tastemakers”—private collectors who have played an instrumental role in the evolution of museums and other collections around the world. They began their collection with the works of key figures from the 1950s Brazilian avant-garde—artists like Lygia Clark, Mira Schendel, and Hélio Oiticica. They have branched out ever since, acquiring works by contemporary Latin American artists like Gabriel Orozco and Damián Ortega.
