Alyson Shotz’s series “Topographic Iterations” (also the title of this show) comprises abstract photo-drawing hybrids with a mysterious trompe l’oeil surface texture. Shotz starts with a crumpled sheet of Japanese Masa paper, which is photographed and printed; the print is then crumpled. The resulting “double crumpled” works look like cracked-earth landscapes or images of the surfaces of a faraway planet. Another series on view, “Recumbent Folds,” similarly relies on chance to produce abstract shapes and patterns: slabs of clay are dropped from various heights, and left to harden in fabric-like folds.
