A giant new player has entered the field of companies competing to sell art online. This morning, Amazon.com launched its online art marketplace, Amazon Art, which it claims is the largest online collection of original and limited-edition artwork for purchase. The site houses a broad selection of art, from folk to Impressionist to modern.
Customers can choose from among approximately 40,000 works from more than 150 galleries and dealers, including Paddle8 in New York, McLoughlin Gallery in San Francisco and Holden Luntz in Miami. Among the pieces on offer are photographs by New York-based Clifford Ross ($200), paintings by Andy Warhol (his canvas Sachiko is listed at $45,000) and Claude Monet’s painting L’Enfant a la tasse, portrait de Jean Monet (a steal at $1.45 million).
Amazon may bring economies of scale to a field that has seen smaller startups like VIP Art and 20×200 seemingly flame out or be acquired by larger companies; firms such as artnet.com, Mixed Greens and Eyestorm, meanwhile, have been in business since the late 1990s.
