Art historian, curator and author Barbara Buhler Lynes has been appointed senior curator of Nova Southeastern University’s Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale, where she has served as consulting curator since January. Part of the south Florida institution’s effort to expand its exhibition programming and research, Lynes’s promotion follows the November 2013 appointment of former Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami head Bonnie Clearwater as director.
A leading scholar on Georgia O’Keeffe and American modernism, Lynes served as founding director of the Georgia O’Keeffe Museum Research Center in Santa Fe, N.M., from 1999-2012. Also the founding curator of the O’Keeffe Museum, she organized exhibitions of O’Keeffe and artists such as Charles Sheeler, Alfred Stieglitz, Paul Strand, Andy Warhol, Edward Weston, Anne Truitt and Sherrie Levine.
Lynes previously served as an independent consultant for the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D.C., from 1992-99, where she authored the Georgia O’Keeffe catalogue raisonné (1999). She is co-founder of the Catalogue Raisonné Scholars Association in affiliation with the College Art Association.
Lynes has also served as professor and chair of the art history department at Maryland Institute College of Art, Baltimore, and as assistant professor of art history at Dartmouth University in Hannover, N.H., and Vanderbilt University in Nashville, Tenn.
As NSU’s senior curator, she will oversee the institution’s curatorial department and permanent collection, including the works of American painter William Glackens, its collection of Latin American Art and its Cobra Study Center.
NSU Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale opened in 1986 and has a permanent collection of more than 6,000 works.
