Martha Rosler: How Do We Know What Home Looks Like?, 1993, video, 31 minutes. In "Better Homes." Courtesy Sculpture Center.
Once mythologized as the private realm of suburban moms, the contemporary domestic sphere, as envisioned in the work included in “Better Homes,” is a contested space where interior design meets late capitalism. How Do We Know What Home Looks Like?, the title of Martha Rosler’s 1993 video about life in a Le Corbusier-designed modernist housing project, sets the anxious, questioning tone of the exhibition, which also includes strong work by Neïl Beloufa, Carissa Rodriquez and LaToya Ruby Frazier.
