Bonnie Clearwater has been hired as the director of the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale at Nova Southeastern University. Director and chief curator of the Museum of Contemporary Art North Miami, where she worked for 18 years, Clearwater takes up her new post Sept. 3. She will still curate a Tracy Emin exhibition slated to open at MOCA North Miami in December. She replaces Irving Lippman, who retired in 2012.
Clearwater is known for having made MOCA North Miami an institution of international stature, curating over 45 exhibitions at the museum and developing a noted collection. She has also curated shows for the National Gallery of Art, Washington, D.C., and the Guggenheim Museum, New York, among other institutions. The museum received a $5 million Knight Foundation grant in 2008.
Founded in 1958, the Museum of Art Fort Lauderdale opened in an Edward Larrabee Barnes-designed modernist building in 1986 and became part of Nova Southeastern University in 2008. Its collection comprises 6,000 works, including an extensive group of works by American painter William Glackens, along with works by the CoBrA group of expressionist painters and numerous works by Latin American artists.
Alex Gartenfeld, former A.i.A. online editor, became curator at MOCA North Miami in May.
