Charlemagne Palestine is an experimentalist extraordinaire and veritable guru to the New York art world. A contemporary of Steve Reich and Philip Glass, Palestine is perhaps best known as a minimalist composer, though there is nothing spare or restrained about his eccentric melding of music, ritual, performance, visual art and sartorial excess. This long overdue solo exhibition features the teddy bear enthusiast’s iconic stuffed animal sculptures as well as a number of ’70s performance videos that oscillate between cathartic psychedelic freakouts and haunting confessionals.
