The cultivated sense of randomness that pervades Darren Bader’s second solo at Andrew Kreps may be a red herring, masking an intricate syntax of images and objects. Billed as three exhibitions in one, the presentation includes “Photographs I Like,” a series of some 60 framed images from disparate sources. It is a brief and scattered history of the medium as if assembled via Google Image search. The gallery floor is taken over with “To Have and to Hold,” a mix of dozens of things and arrangements of things that includes a palletized stack of cardboard boxes, a Memphis design desk and a paint can. It’s hard to articulate the logic that binds these objects, but it’s harder still to imagine the installation working as it does without a deliberate process of selection. The third exhibition, identified in the press release as “a show on a piece of paper at the front desk,” projects the entire project into the space of language and commerce.
