No fewer than 10 artists represented by Marian Goodman will be featured in the upcoming Documenta, as revealed by a perusal of the leaked list published last week by the German newspaper Süddeutsche Zeitung. That’s more than 25% of the artists the gallery represents in toto.
The Goodman-Documenta list:
Tacita Dean
Pierre Huyghe
Amar Kanwar
William Kentridge
Julie Mehretu
Giuseppe Penone
Anri Sala
Tino Sehgal
Lawrence Weiner
Adrian Villar Rojas
It makes this outing of the quinquennial show in Kassel a triumph for a dealer (she prefers the term “gallerist,” without the unfortunate whiff of actual dealing, according to a profile by Blake Gopnik) known for showing challenging artists like Steve McQueen and Tino Sehgal.
Goodman’s current New York show is a survey of works by Penone; her Paris venue is showing new works by Ellsworth Kelly.
Among other feathers in her cap this spring, the film Gerhard Richter Painting, devoted to another of her artists, is also currently screening in numerous cities; Anri Sala will represent France at the Venice Biennale in 2013; and Tacita Dean is the subject of a show at New York’s New Museum.
No other single New York gallery has as much of its stable represented on the list. Barbara Gladstone (Allora & Calzadilla, Kai Althoff and Rosemarie Trockel) and Casey Kaplan (Trisha Donnelly, Geoffrey Farmer and Brian Jungen) are tied as distant runners-up, followed by Paula Cooper (Sam Durant and Walid Raad). The roster is broadly international and many artists featured have no New York gallery.
