Visiting “Euqinimod & Costumes,” Dominique Gonzalez-Foerster’s New York solo gallery exhibition, feels like entering the largest walk-in closet in Manhattan. Pieces of the artist’s own clothing—everything from athletic wear to novelty T-shirts to formal dresses—hang from the walls on wooden pegs or on garment racks arranged around the room. The clothing items and a few other assorted textiles are paired, in subtle vignettes, with paintings and drawings of domestic interiors as well as photographs of Gonzalez-Foerster performing in period costume as Edgar Allan Poe and Scarlett O’Hara. Although many of the objects on view are mass-produced—ready to wear, if not readymade in the strict Duchampian sense—the feeling of the installation is as personal and intimate as a narrative memoir.
