Painter Dona Nelson has been named the winner of the Artists’ Legacy Foundation’s 2013 Artist Award. Established in 2007, the annual award recognizes the career and accomplishments of artists working in painting or sculpture. Nelson will receive a $25,000 prize in a ceremony on Nov. 2, 2013, in San Francisco.
The subject of solo shows at New York’s MoMA P.S.1, the University of North Carolina and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, Nelson has previously received a Guggenheim fellowship and two grants from the National Endowment for the Arts. She is also a professor of painting and drawing at the Tyler School of Art at Temple University, Philadelphia.
The Oakland-based Artists’ Legacy Foundation was launched in 2000 by painter Squeak Carnwath, her husband Gary Knecht and sculptor Viola Frey. Past winners have included sculptor John Outterbridge, Llyn Foulkes, Peter Saul and Kathy Butterly.
