Just when you thought you couldn’t add another art fair to your calendar, the Downtown Armory Fair has announced its inaugural edition (May 8-11, 2014), to take place at the 69th Regiment Armory, at Lexington Avenue between 25th and 26th Streets. The fair will coincide with the third outing of Frieze New York (May 9-12, 2014).
Fifty international exhibitors, to be selected by New York dealers Nancy Hoffman and Yossi Milo and St. Louis’s William Shearburn, will be announced in January.
The fair director is New York-based Lisa Hatchadoorian, who was most recently the curator at the Nicolaysen Art Museum, in Casper, Wyo., and holds a master’s in curatorial studies of contemporary art from Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
Not to be confused with the Armory Show, which started out as the hotel-sited Gramercy Art Fair and is now on two Hudson River piers, the Downtown Armory Fair will take place in the building that housed the 1913 Armory Show, where European artists such as Marcel Duchamp were introduced to a scandalized American public.
