New York’s El Museo del Barrio announced today that Jorge Daniel Veneciano has been hired as the museum’s new director, a position that has been vacant since Margarita Aguilar left in February. According to a lawsuit she since filed, she was fired. Veneciano will begin next March.
His appointment coincides with two other recent announcements by the museum: the resignation of Chus Martínez, chief curator, two days ago, and a $1.6 million grant from the Ford Foundation that will provide funding for the next three years.
Veneciano is currently the director of the Sheldon Museum of Art at the University of Nebraska, a position he has held since 2008. Previous to the Sheldon, he was director of the Paul Robeson Galleries at Rutgers University in New Jersey (2005-08), and curator of exhibitions at the Studio Museum in Harlem (1994-99).
