Elizabeth Neel: New Green, 2013, oil and spray paint on canvas, 76 by 96 inches. Courtesy Sikkema Jenkins.
It’s not entirely clear how the two disparate bodies of work in Elizabeth Neel’s show relate to each other. But the loosely architectural configurations of Neel’s abstract oil and spray paint canvases and her neatly assembled tableaux are enough to pull the show together. In the gallery’s back room is a series of smaller (24-by-19-inch) acrylic on paper drawings. (Fun fact: Neel is the granddaughter of famed New York painter Alice Neel.)
