Emily Mason’s work offers a vital link between Abstract Expressionism and Color Field painting. Exhibiting since the 1950s, Mason is in top form in this show of recent large paintings featuring inventive combinations of analogous color, especially searing reds and oranges. These are punctuated here and there with a sharply contrasting tone. Evocative of misty landscapes and wild sunsets, Mason’s compositions never cross the line toward description, and she remains true to the idealistic aims of pure abstraction.
