Minneapolis’s Walker Art Center has hired Fionn Meade to fill the newly created post of senior curator of cross-disciplinary platforms. A writer and curator, Meade is currently a faculty member at Columbia University and at the Center for Curatorial Studies at Bard College, Annandale-on-Hudson, N.Y.
Meade will oversee the Walker’s presentation of “Radical Presence” (July 24-Jan. 4, 2015), a traveling exhibition organized by Contemporary Arts Museum Houston curator Valerie Cassel Oliver that examines black performance art from the 1960s to today. Also upcoming at the Walker is an exhibition on artists’ collaborations with choreographer Merce Cunningham, whose archive is at the museum.
Previously a curator at New York’s Sculpture Center and Seattle’s Henry Art Gallery, Meade will also serve as the interim head of the museums’ visual arts department until a replacement is named for former chief curator Darsie Alexander. She was named executive director at the Katonah Museum of Art, N.Y., in January.
Meade, who will start his new job May 5, will be joined at the Walker by Isla Leaver-Yap, who has been appointed the Bentson Visiting Film Scholar. She will be conducting research on avant-garde film from 1943 to 1985. Leaver-Yap has degrees in art history and English from the University of Edinburgh, Scotland.
