The Getty has announced the first round of grant recipients for Pacific Standard Time LA/LA, a new iteration of the mammoth multi-institution arts collaboration that first took place in 2011-12. In its 2017 outing, the project will focus on Latin American art. (The double initials stand for Los Angeles/Latin America.) Five million dollars in grants will support 46 exhibitions and events at 40 organizations.
Taking home the biggest prize is the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), which will be granted $335,000 in research support for the exhibitions “50 Years of Design in Latin America, 1920-1970,” the group show “A Universal History of Infamy,” focused on alternative artist practices in Latin America and in the U.S., and “Playing with Fire: The Art of Carlos Almaraz.”
The Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego is another big winner, with $275,000 in research support for “Memories of Underdevelopment,” a show organized with Mexico City’s Museo Rufino Tamayo and the Museo de Arte de Lima, focusing on South American and Mexican conceptual and performance art.
Other grantees include the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Hammer Museum in L.A., and the San Diego Museum of Art.
The inaugural initiative, “Pacific Standard Time: Art in L.A., 1945-1980,” ran October 2011 through April 2012, and brought together 60 partnering institutions across Southern California.
