Glenn Adamson has been named the next director of New York’s Museum of Arts and Design (MAD). He is currently head of the research department at London’s Victoria & Albert (V&A) Museum. He started out his museum career at MAD with his first post-college internship, and he assumes his new role Oct. 15.
Adamson replaces Holly Hotchner, who announced her resignation in January after 16 years in the post.
“I believe that we are positioned to be the leading museum dedicated to making, across all creative fields,” Adamson said in a press release.
The Boston-born Adamson, 41, has been at the V&A since 2005, prior to which he served as curator for the Chipstone Foundation, in Milwaukee, Wisc., which collects decorative arts. He earned a bachelor’s degree in art history at Cornell University in 1994 and a doctorate in art history from Yale in 2001.
His publications include The Invention of Craft (2013) and Thinking Through Craft (2007). Adamson also is founding co-editor of the academic Journal of Modern Craft.
