Gregory Gillespie’s art is difficult to categorize. A master of his craft, the New Jersey-born, Massachusetts-based painter followed a singular path of figuration that was neither realist nor surrealist, although possessing attributes of both. Featuring 21 paintings and works on paper, “Supernatural Observation” is a concise overview of themes that long preoccupied Gillespie before he took his own life in 2000, at age 63. On view are several fine self-portraits and outstanding examples of nature and figure studies, such as Painter in Bedroom (1994) and Lady with Jewels (also known as Woman with Beads), 1969, which reflect a unique and intimate exploration of the human psyche, especially his own.
