James Jenkin, the director of New York nonprofit Printed Matter, will leave the organization in February 2014. He has been in the job since summer 2011, and will now take up a post as director of enterprise management with the Clinton Giustra Enterprise Partnership, part of the Clinton Foundation.
Founded by artist Sol Le Witt and critic Lucy Lippard in 1976, Printed Matter publishes and sells artists’ books and multiples at its Chelsea storefront and its annual book fairs in New York and Los Angeles. Jenkin is sticking around until after the upcoming L.A. art book fair.
“It is with mixed emotion that I have decided to step down as executive director,” Jenkin said in a press release. “It has been an incredible honor to be a part of Printed Matter and I am grateful for having had the opportunity to work with such a talented and passionate community.”
“James was a terrific executive director at a critical time in Printed Matter’s history,” said board chair Philip Aarons in the press release. “Marshalling a wide range of external resources after the disastrous flooding caused by superstorm Sandy one year ago, James made tremendous headway towards establishing Printed Matter on firm ground both financially and programmatically.”
Aarons went on to tout Jenkin’s accomplishments, namely increasing sales of publications as well as number of titles published, reducing the organization’s debt and overseeing the launch of a newly designed website.
In fiscal year 2011-12, Printed Matter reported contributions and grants totaling $294,985 and had a total revenue of $1 million, with expenses of $916,800. In addition to Aarons, Printed Matter’s board includes artist Tauba Auerbach and dealer Carolina Nitsch.
