The Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis (CAM) has hired Jeffrey Uslip as its new chief curator, effective in February. The appointment fills the vacancy left following the departure of Dominic Molon, who became the curator of contemporary art at the Rhode Island School of Design Museum of Art last September after three years with CAM.
Since 2010, Uslip has been the curator-at-large at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, where he worked with Lisa Melandri, who was the deputy director there before becoming CAM’s executive director in the summer of 2012. Uslip has organized solo exhibitions for artists such as Michael Queenland and Agnes Denes. His most recent show, “Joyce Pensato: I KILLED KENNY,” appeared in Santa Monica in 2013, and is traveling to CAM later this month (Jan. 24-Apr. 13).
“Throughout his career, Jeffrey has dedicated himself to exhibiting a full and varied range of artistic practices as well as artists at different stages in their careers,” said Melandri of her once and future coworker in a press release. “His commitment to collaboration, scholarship, and community engagement is a perfect fit with CAM and will help us grow in new and dynamic ways.”
In addition to his curatorial work, which includes shows at New York’s MoMA PS1 and Los Angeles’s LAXART, among other institutions, Uslip is a PhD candidate at New York University’s Institute of Fine Arts, where he is studying modern and contemporary art and the history of photography. In his new role, Uslip will oversee exhibitions featuring artists such as Kelley Walker, Missouri native Jesse Howard, and Los Angeles’s Joe Goode. A solo exhibition of work by Texas’s Mark Flood organized by Uslip is scheduled for September.
