Jennifer Gross has been appointed deputy director for curatorial affairs and chief curator at the deCordova Sculpture Park and Museum, in Lincoln, Mass. Gross is currently curator of modern and contemporary art at the Yale University Art Gallery, where she has worked since 2000. She was previously curator of contemporary art at Boston’s Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum. She replaces Nick Capasso, who was at deCordova for over two decades. He left deCordova in late 2012 to become director of Massachusetts’s Fitchburg Art Museum.
“Having worked at the Gardner, I am very familiar with the Boston area and its amazing arts community,” Gross told A.i.A. by phone today. “For me, that’s one of the wonderful draws of the job, and the deCordova is a beloved institution in the area. The management wants to improve the museum’s national and international profile, and is working on a master plan to refine the mission and curatorial program. I’m excited to be involved in that.”
A New Jersey native, Gross earned a PhD in art history at the City University of New York. Some of her notable curatorial efforts include “Richard Artschwager!” (2013), which appeared at New York’s Whitney Museum of American Art and is now on view at the UCLA Hammer Museum (through Sept. 1); “Continuous Present” (2009), a group show at Yale that included Francis Alÿs, Rodney Graham, Roni Horn and Franz West; and “The Société Anonyme: Modernism for America” (2012-2013), on view (through July 14) at the newly renovated Yale gallery after a national tour.
