Shredded magazines, including Art in America, are among the materials that go into the creations of furniture designer Jens Praet. The Belgian-born designer, who has a studio near Florence, is showing nine pieces from his “Shredded” Collection at Industry Gallery in Washington, D.C. They include a console, bench, tables and a shelf.
To make the pieces, which also feature Capitol File, Details, Fast Company and Robb Report, Praet mixes the shredded mags with clear resin. The console, for example, uses 11 pounds of Art in America‘s remains (equal to as many copies of our February offering), and might serve nicely as, say, a magazine stand.
The series arose from Praet’s concern for sustainability. “What started as a research project,” he says, “turned out to be a continuously growing furniture collection. Paper waste returns to our living or working area as usable furniture.”
“Fossilized” is open through Feb. 26, with prices ranging from $3,000 to $15,000.
