In this conceptually and technically ambitious exhibition of recent paintings, sculptures and large installations, Julião Sarmento imaginatively unites Edgar Degas and Marcel Duchamp, two major influences. Degas’s work is evoked in two large figurative sculptures based on his Little Dancer (ca. 1881). While they echo the young dancer’s pose, Sarmento’s imposing figures are grown women shown nude. These haunting sculptures were created with the help of live models and 3-D computer technology. The Portuguese artist’s references to Duchamp are comparatively subtle. A number of the large paintings, for instance, feature faintly delineated details from Duchamp’s iconic The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even (1915-23).
