This show’s title, “Overcoming the Modern: Dansaekhwa; Korean Monochrome Movement,” speaks volumes about correcting art-historical neglect. But something else—namely, an unapologetic love of formal beauty—pervades this score of paintings and works on paper by seven Korean modernists, all born between 1927 and and 1946. (Probably only Lee Ufan and Park Seo-bo can claim name recognition in this hemisphere.) Compositional elegance and extreme sensitivity to materials are the common elements of these abstractions, which were brought to New York by the curatorial team of Sam Bardaouil and Till Fellrath, based in Europe and the Middle East.
