New York’s Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art has announced gifts in excess of $10 million. According to the museum, which was accredited in April, this is the largest donation ever received by any LGBT arts organization.
Founder Charles W. Leslie has made a gift of $8.8 million of stock in memory of his partner Fredric D. (Fritz) Lohman. Also contributing to the nascent museum is the estate of artist Marion Pinto, with a donation of $1.5 million dollars.
Jonathan D. Katz, president of the museum’s board of directors, says in a press release, “Charles Leslie is one of the few individuals in New York with both the capacity, and the political will, to rectify the silence around gay/lesbian art and artists in New York’s major museums, by setting up our own gay and lesbian art museum.”
On view at the museum through July 7 is “The Piers: Art and Sex along the New York Waterfront,” curated by art historian Jonathan Weinberg and artist Darren Jones.
